Irene Storm Tide: VIMS Boat Basin

A time-lapse movie from the Boat Basin at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science in Gloucester Point, VA during the passage of Hurricane Irene on Saturday, August 27, 2011. The video shows that water levels remain high throughout the daily tidal cycle due to Irene's storm surge. The video starts at 7 am EDT near the first daily high tide (2.81 feet at 8:22 AM), proceeds through low tide (0.20 feet at 2:24 PM), and ends around sunset (7:42 PM) as the tide is rising toward the second daily high tide (3.15 feet at 8:42 PM). Pronounced storm-tide flooding in the VIMS Boat Basin begins around 6:00 PM. Images were taken every 10 seconds and played back at 2X speed on the video. Data from the Tidewatch network at VIMS shows that peak water levels in lower Chesapeake Bay during Irene occurred at around 9 pm on Saturday evening in conjunction with the high tide.
